When Piper was born we noticed that she favoured a tilt to one side with her head. Being new parents we assumed that she was simply not strong enough to hold her head up, however we started to notice that the tilt was always towards the same side. Without worrying too much, we decided to bring it to our Midwife's attention. After analyzing her neck and posture our Midwife suggested that we bring Piper to a Chiropractor certified to treat infants.
Between our visit with our Midwife, and the appointment with our Chiropractor we purchased a head support that would hold her head straight. Here are some before and after photos from before the supportive insert and after.
During our visit with the Chiropractor she very quickly let us know that Piper has a condition called Torticollis which sounds scary, but it's actually quite common! Babies can get Torticollis for various reasons, whether it be their positioning inside the uterus, or in Piper's case where she was stuck with her head twisted (leaving the muscles slightly damaged) to the left during delivery.
Torticollis means "twisted neck", and about 1 in 250 babies are born with it. With a stat like that, I was eager to learn more about it and of course to figure out the most effective way to treat it!
Now this is where I get Super honest about the Chiropractic treatments...and I want to say first that this is simply Our experience (meaning, other people could have had a completely different experience!). Piper was going to get adjustments twice a week for the first 3 months of her life. I was told that this consistency would ensure that the structural changes would stick! Also when I say "adjustment", I mean it's a very light push while pressing with the finger to adjust. Side note: if you are choosing to bring your baby to a chiropractor make sure he or she is a Pediatric Chiropractor! I have heard horror stories about wee babes receiving adult-level adjustments and it scares me so much!
Anyways, for us ..we just weren't seeing results from the treatments. Three months of dragging my little nugget to the chiropractor (sometimes interrupting naps), was a commitment I was determined to make if it meant that her neck would be better. However, we kept noticing the tilt, and furthermore we started to notice that nursing with her head tilted in the opposite direction was causing her pain. So it was time to research new options. Before I get into the options that Worked, I do want to say that the adjustments DID help Piper's colic and reflux! So it wasn't a complete waste of time!
So during these first three months of treatments we also noticed a flat spot forming on the side that Piper favoured (despite our efforts to keep her head straight). Although her head was less tilted, laying on her back or sitting in her stroller still meant that she was putting slight pressure on that side. Not only was she still putting pressure on her favoured side, but laying flat in that position was forming the flat spot. It was during this time that I came across a company called Mimos Canada. I was excited to discover that Mimos specializes in pillows that have been developed Specifically to prevent and correct Baby flat head syndrome, and therefore also for babies with Torticollis! Here is a picture of the pillow!
We started to use the pillow in Piper's bassinet when she was sleeping, when she was laying on her mat playing, and in her stroller (when it was in a reclined/bassinet position). After using the Pillow religiously for approximately a month we noticed a huge difference in the area of her flat spot. It is hard to capture the flat spot through images, however in the first images you will notice that the back of Piper's head on her left side is not rounded.
As I mentioned before, we used the Mimos Religiously. Every time P was in her stroller, or laying down we used it. The results have been incredible. Here is a picture of P at Christmas. You can see that there is a "cup" at the back of her head now, and it is no longer flat.
We eventually switched to Osteopathic treatments for Piper's tummy troubles, and during our visits she received cranial support to compliment the work of the Mimos pillow!
When Piper became more mobile, staying put on her pillow became a challenge, so those extra Osteopathic treatments really helped. Thanks to the Mimos pillow there hasn't been much for the Osteopath to do besides working on stabilizing her torticollis and helping her tummy. Our girl is now 7 months and we really haven't needed any treatments or support with the pillow in over a month- which is wonderful!! I was worried in the beginning when I heard about Mimos because I thought she might need to use it long term ..and that once we stopped, her head would revert backwards. Thankfully, the goal of the Mimos pillow is to support and Correct -meaning that eventually the baby will no longer need it- because the issue is fixed. We are excited to say that not only does Piper no longer need her Mimos pillow or any treatments at all - But the issues have Not returned!
In conclusion, we are huge advocates for Mimos Canada. As I mentioned, we loved complimenting the support of the pillow with Osteopathic treatments for Torticollis and flat spots. Combined- these steps have helped Piper immensely! She no longer has a tilt or flat spots And she doesn't experience pain while nursing on either side!
