Ladies and Gentlemen..we are Approaching the first day of Spring..we are almost there!! It was an unforgiving Winter filled with extreme cold warnings and multiple dumpings of snow. I don't know about you all, but having to stay inside a lot started to make me feel isolated and those seasonal mood altering symptoms started to creep up. So I had to find a way to get outside more often without feeling nervous or guilty about exposing Piper to the cold. I'm going to share my 4 favourite items that got us through the winter and why they will be great for Spring as well.
So the first item I wanted to find to keep Piper warm, was a durable, weather resistance jacket extension:
1. Kokoala- For both Pregnancy and Portering
When we head out for a walk around the block we generally bring Piper in her stroller. However, if we are going on a hike-it usually means that the trail is not paved, and the elevation will vary. In the case of a hike, I prefer to wear P close to my body in a carrier for many reasons: warmth and protection would be the top priority, but I also don't love dragging a stroller through a bumpy, uneven, climbing trail!
I came across Kokoala's page on instagram originally, and after reading more about their mission-which focuses on enjoying time with your child outdoors in any season- I knew I had found my perfect accessory. I also love that they custom create the extension piece to fit your current coat-so it's a fraction of the cost of purchasing a babywearing coat. Plus- They're Canadian! So they understand COLD winters, and I love supporting companies that were dreamed up in our beautiful country.
How Does it Work?
All you have to do is zip the extension onto one side of your coat. Get your babe into your carrier, and then put the coat on-while wrapping the loose end of the extension around to meet the other zipper. Zip up and you're done! The extension is waterproof and cosy as is-but I chose to add on two extra accessories:
The Cap for Babies:
Extra Polar Detachable Lining:
Next, I wanted to find a Base Layer that I could rely on to keep Piper warm:
2. Wee Woollies Pure Merino Base Layer
I came across Wee Woollies on my friend Maman on the Trails blog and instagram page. If you're a family that loves the outdoors, definitely follow along with @mamanonthetrail ! Monica gives fantastic advice for Hiking, Camping and Parenting, and she listed Wee Woollie's base layer as her favourite item to keep her son warm. We really wanted to learn more, so we read up on their mission. They get their pure merino wool directly from New Zealand. It's a natural performance wool processed without exposure to harsh chemicals and made with non-toxic dyes. Their company also ensures that all of their clothing is made ethically, with sustainable practices and with animal welfare in mind.
How Does It Work?
One of the questions I kept asking myself when I was getting P dressed to go outside was, "How do I layer her clothing so that she is warm enough but not too warm?". I worried about too many layers overheating her, and vice versa. So I was so excited when Monica shared her Winter Layering Guide which you can check out here: Maman on the Trail Layering Guide
I really loved this visual that she put together. I saved it in my phone and used it as a quick reference based on the temperature outside!
Definitely check out more tips from Monica! She is so thorough with her reviews and advice, and I have definitely used her blog for outdoor related posts on a number of occasions!
So as you can see, this base layer can be used throughout all seasons all the way from -25 degrees C to +15 degrees C!
We absolutely love this base layer! It is the softest item of clothing we own hands down, and the ultra fine merino fibers have the amazing ability to regulate body temperature. The wool also has a natural wick for moisture -so our babe stays dry and protected from the cold damp air.
The base layer can also be used as a sleeper, so it's great for transferring your babe from outside into his or her crib seamlessly for a nap!
Now, if your little one is walking, the next item would definitely be a good pair of boots- and you can see that Monica has suggested Stonz Toddler boots. I would also recommend a good pair of gloves that are waterproof and have a drawstring or elastic to stay in place- IF your babe is mobile. For Piper, we have a simple pair of Polar fleece material gloves that slip on, as she is usually tucked inside my jacket or inside her warm stroller insert-which I will talk about next!
3. Three Season Cozy Stroller Insert
Okay, so this was a Must Have for us for Fall, Winter and Spring! I do not have a specific company to recommend however, because this was gifted to us by my mother. She found a woman who makes them in Germany online, and then lost the contact...that helps a lot right?? Well I debated leaving this item out altogether for that reason, but I just couldn't! Our winter walks wouldn't have been the same without our snuggly stroller cozy! So, I thought I would include some links to some great options that are similar to the one we have! What did I look for?
Skip Hop Stroll & Go Three-Season Baby Stroller Footmuff
Last but not least, a Quality Hat is So important. I would highly suggest natural wool which will wick and also hold in warmth. Wee Woollies makes beautiful Merino Hats, which you can find here:
Merino Wool Beanie
I also really love a company called Pacific Knot, which I will talk about below!
4. Pacific Knot-Hand Knit Wool Toques
Although there are lots of options for hats, I wanted to mention this company for more than one reason. As you can see both Piper and I have Pacific Knot hats. They are made with care and the wool is so soft and keeps both of us warm even in the coldest weather. You can choose from colours and designs already made, or customize your order!
I also adore the idea of mommy and me or daddy and me matching hats (I know I’m super lame)..but seriously, so cute. Check out Pacific Knot, and get to know the amazing maker Nikolina by clicking Here
I hope this was helpful guys! I’m a firm believer in getting outside as much as possible-and sometimes all that is holding us back is proper layering! Let me know what you think about the items if you try them out!! I always love to hear your feedback :)
Enjoy your time Outside with the Fam xoxo
