Surely I am not the only one who feels like pregnancy=colossal teenager category acne. During my first trimester I went through the following stages:
Now, at this point I am well past the first trimester and I can have a giggle looking back at how horrible I felt...but at that time I felt like my entire body was going bananas and there was nothing I could do about it. Eventually I learned how to cope with the nausea (upcoming post spoiler) and migraines, however my skin was an issue that was really making me uncomfortable. So I decided to ask my Naturopath what I can do to heal it. She recommended two products which I purchased immediately:
Primrose Oil: My Naturopath suggested that I take 3 capsules of Primrose Oil per day to help my skin. I purchased this Ultra Prim from Goodness Me for $10.99 and started taking it immediately. Primrose Oil is known to promote skin and hormone support, and helps to balance PMS symptoms (hormones). It`s also a great source of Omega 6 fatty acid.
Emu Oil: I had previously heard about the benefits of Emu oil, but I had never tried it. Once my Naturopath recommended it, I was excited to give it a shot! I bought my Emu Oil from Goodness Me also, and it was $15.99. I was worried about how small the bottle is, but a very small amount goes far! Emu oil is known for healing dry, inflamed skin including hormonal skin or eczema. It`s anti-inflammatory properties are super powerful, and it feels so gentle and soothing (love!).
So...When does this stuff start to Work?
After a couple of weeks of using Primrose Oil and Emu Oil, I DID notice an improvement...but my skin still felt irritated and the acne was still very much an annoyance. So I decided to check out some of the skin products at Sephora while doing some Christmas shopping. I got talking to a skin specialist about my skin, and her eyes lit up....she had experienced the same skin issues during her pregnancy! So she got me a little basket and started filling it with her MUST HAVES!
boscia Exfoliating Peel Gel: Because my skin was feeling so awful...I was exfoliating it like crazy to get rid of the dry skin. What I did NOT realize is that, although exfoliating is super important if your skin is dry and irritated, the TYPE of exfoliator I was using was actually making things worse. She explained that the tough sand-like particles in my exfoliator were actually irritating my skin more and making it more inflamed and fragile (which caused More breakouts). So she recommended the boscia exfoliating peel gel. This stuff is AMAZING. As you rub it in circles on your skin, you feel the dead skin particles gently rubbing off. Boscia describes its process like this: ``Used on dry skin, it delivers unique molecules that bond together to adhere to old, dead skin cells, allowing an antioxidant-rich blend of multi-fruit alpha hydroxy acids to perform deep exfoliation process like a professional chemical peel``. It feels so gentle...and I always feel so fresh faced after using this product! Game Changer for sure!
-Purchased at Sephora for $42
Ren Evercalm, Anti-Redness Serum: As we approached the Ren counter at Sephora, the kind lady helping me told me about the line...apparently it was developed by a man who formulated the various creams and serums to help his wife who had been suffering from Hormonal Skin issues for years. I couldn`t believe how quick this Serum worked. She put a bit on my face and handed me a mirror. I was shocked to watch as my red inflamed, sore, acne covered skin instantly calmed down, the redness began to dissipate, and I felt a cooling sensation that made my face feel fresh. Life saver!
-Purchased at Sephora for $55
Origins Masks: The last thing I picked up were two Origins masks to try out. You can get any of their masks in these little pods that give you about 3 full faced masks worth of cream for $5. I was told that these masks are Miracle workers...and that I would notice a huge difference incorporating them into my skin care. She wasn`t sure which one would be best for me, so she suggested that I try both: Out of Trouble and Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief. I have actually found that my skin needed both of these masks, so I use Out of Trouble when my skin is at a breaking point, and Mega-Mushroom for ongoing inflammation relief. Let me tell you, my skin feels as smooth as a babies bum after using these masks!!
Her last recommendation was a Hydrating Spray...and the one she showed me was another $50 product...and my little basket was now looking like it was filled with dollar signs. I remembered a cheaper spray from Shoppers Drug Mart that I used when I was younger for irritated skin, so I called it a day, splurged on my Sephora products and went to Shoppers!
Sure enough I found the Thermal Spring Water Spray I used previously (and loved) and thought, why did I stop using this stuff?
The spray is meant to keep your skin quenched, and it`s soothing and softening properties actually make your skin feel like you`re giving it a glass of water. My super helpful informant at Sephora swears that Thermal Sprays are a hugely overlooked secret of European skin care staples. She suggested that I keep it with me and give my skin a spray whenever it starts to feel tight or sore.
Oh, and I got this large bottle from Shoppers for $21.75 !
Last but not least, I Occasionally incorporate my trusty (and favourite) Hydrating Cream that I order for myself and friends religiously. It is made by my favourite essential oil company doTERRA, and it`s filled with soothing Lavender, Jasmine, Geranium and the King of Oils: Frankincense. This little pot of anti-aging and hydrating goodness goes for about $35 depending on USD or CAD currency. This cream should be used sparingly while pregnant and I dilute it in some coconut oil to be safe. Essential oils during pregnancy can be a controversial topic...so feel free to avoid this step altogether!
So how do I incorporate all of these creams, serums, masks and sprays?
After incorporating these products I noticed a Shocking difference in my skin within two weeks. Although my skin isn`t crystal clear again YET, the breakouts have slowed down dramatically, and they really don`t bother me at all anymore (very minimal)...and the red, irritated patches have disappeared! If your skin is anything like mine was, whether it is from pregnancy or not, I hope that you find relief through these products as well and that you will share your experience or feedback with me!
